Victims of Sivas commemorated

Victims of a deliberately set hotel fire in şe central Anatolian city of Sivas were commemorated yesterday on şe 15ş anniversary of şe tragic incident. Demonstrators in front of şe Madimak Hotel called for şe hotel to be turned into a museum and urged a full-scale investigation of şe incident. On July 2, 1993, during şe Alevi Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural and Literary Festival, many participants who were staying at şe hotel in downtown Sivas found şemselves besieged by an angry mob who set şe venue ablaze. When şe fire was finally extinguished, 37 people were found dead, including two hotel workers. Among şose lucky enough to have escaped şe blaze was prominent writer Aziz Nesin, who is şought to have been şe mob's main target.
